The Southwest Power Pool’s (SPP) Generation Interconnection Advisory Group (GIAG) gathered virtually on April 23, 2025, to discuss key updates and initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency of the generation interconnection process. With interconnection requests continuing to surge, SPP and stakeholders focused heavily on identifying ways to streamline study timelines, manage the growing queue, and enhance transparency for market participants.
A central focus of the meeting was refining the Definitive Interconnection System Impact Study (DISIS) procedures. SPP staff outlined proposed enhancements designed to address mounting study backlogs and better accommodate the record number of active interconnection requests. Stakeholders engaged in detailed discussions about potential changes that could help reduce delays and improve project certainty.
SPP also presented an update on the current state of the interconnection queue, highlighting the number of projects awaiting study and outlining projected completion timelines. The growing complexity and volume of interconnection requests were noted as ongoing challenges, prompting conversations about strategies to expedite study processes without compromising thoroughness.
Another key topic was the evolving regulatory landscape. SPP reviewed recent and upcoming revisions to its Open Access Transmission Tariff (OATT) that impact generator interconnection, stressing the need to align tariff provisions with federal standards and emerging industry best practices. These policy changes aim to provide greater clarity and consistency for developers navigating the interconnection process.
Stakeholder engagement remains a priority for SPP, and the GIAG meeting underscored the organization’s commitment to gathering industry feedback. SPP encouraged active participation in upcoming workshops to ensure that proposed improvements meet the diverse needs of market participants.
