The MISO IPWG meeting convened on April 22, 2025, continuing its efforts to refine interconnection processes and address mounting queue backlogs. The meeting focused on implementing the next phases of MISO’s queue reform initiatives and introducing technical improvements to transmission studies.
A major topic of discussion was the upcoming implementation of the Long-Term Regional Transmission Planning (LRTP) Projects Impact Analysis within the generator interconnection process. MISO staff outlined how future interconnection studies will integrate LRTP project assumptions, ensuring that new generation aligns with planned transmission expansions and system needs.
Stakeholders also received updates on Queue Cycle 2023 progress. MISO reported that Definitive Planning Phase 2 (DPP2) studies are underway and provided updated timelines for study completion. The volume and complexity of requests remain significant, but MISO emphasized its commitment to maintaining transparency and improving study efficiency.
Additionally, the IPWG explored technical refinements in short-circuit analysis methodology, aimed at improving the accuracy and efficiency of fault studies for new generation projects. MISO proposed adjustments that would streamline model building while still capturing critical system behavior under fault conditions.
Another important area of focus was generator interconnection cost allocation. MISO reviewed stakeholder feedback on potential changes to cost allocation policies, particularly as they relate to large network upgrades triggered by multiple projects. Discussions highlighted the balancing act between cost certainty for developers and maintaining equitable treatment across the interconnection queue.
MISO concluded the meeting by inviting feedback on study process improvements and previewing upcoming stakeholder engagement opportunities related to queue management and transmission planning.
