MISO GI Process is experiencing updates following the Generator Interconnection Queue Process Workshop held August 25. The workshop clarified how interconnection will work going forward: the new Generator Interconnection Application portal, a regional Queue Cap that limits each DPP cycle, and a tight definition of “ready” (binding site control, complete tech packages, and fast deficiency responses). With ERAS offering a limited fast-track and Order 2023 updates tightening timelines, success now hinges on preparation. We’ve compiled this guide so you can focus on what to do now under the new portal and capped-queue environment. You can access our full overview of the Generator Interconnection Queue Process Workshop here.
MISO GI Process: Steps for a successful interconnection
1) Portal Setup: Get into the new Generator Interconnection Application (GIA) portal
- Create and confirm your MISO Help Center account and assign the correct user role.
- Add all internal/external teammates who will help complete the application (legal, siting, modeling).
- Keep legacy records in the old portal for reference; all new applications file in the new one.
2) Pre-assemble required evidence
- Site control: binding docs (option/lease/deed) + parcel map(s); align names, legal descriptions, and acreage.
- Tie-line & POI: gather ownership/right-of-way evidence or the applicable financial alternative per tariff.
- Technical package: one-line, collector layout, gen/tie-line specs, reactive capability; confirm IBR model availability.
- Affidavits/attestations: use current tariff forms; ensure signatory authority is clear.
3) Cap Timing: Check the regional Queue Cap before you file
- Review the latest Queue Cap/Tracker for your study region.
- If your region is tight, finalize materials early; incomplete or late items risk missing the cap.
4) Submit a first-time-right application
- Complete every portal section; avoid “TBD” placeholders.
- Upload clean PDFs with consistent naming (ProjectName_DocType_Date.pdf).
- Pay required fees/deposits at submission; confirm receipt in the portal.
5) Respond fast during intake
- Monitor portal messages; fix any deficiencies once with complete, final documents.
- Keep your contact list current so reviewers can reach the right person on the first try.
6) Modeling readiness
- Confirm whether PSCAD/EMT is required for your TO/region or by milestone.
- Validate model versions, parameter ranges, and naming conventions match tariff/BPM guidance.
7) Know your alternatives & milestones
- If eligible, assess ERAS (expedited study) as a separate, limited-slot path, only if your documentation is airtight.
- Track downstream milestones (cluster studies, surplus/replacement options, GIA execution) and pre-stage what’s needed.
Pro tips (save time, avoid rework)
- Consistency wins: Every name, MW/MWh, parcel ID, and coordinate must match across docs and maps.
- No soft docs: LOIs/MOUs and non-binding terms are typically not accepted for site control.
- Version control: Lock your internal “v1.0” package before upload; avoid piecemeal changes.
- One point of contact: Designate a primary PM for portal comms and due-date tracking.
How ZEG can help
- GI application & portal filing: We will build a first-time-right package and file it in MISO’s new portal, handling uploads, fees, and deficiency responses.
- Queue Cap strategy: Our experts will plan around your region’s cap, monitor the tracker, and align your timeline to the DPP cycle.
- ERAS fast-track: We will evaluate eligibility, assemble evidence, and submit within the limited ERAS windows.
- Surplus / Replacement: Our experts can structure Surplus Interconnection and Generator Replacement packages per Attachment X/BPM-015.
- Modeling & studies (IBR/EMT + electrical): We will validate models, run shadow checks, and recommend mitigations before formal studies.
- Siting & POI screening: Our experts can use REST™ and nodal analytics to shortlist POIs and right-size projects before you file.
